Prague Museums
NARODNI TECHNICKE
MUZEUM
(NATIONAL TECHNICAL MUSEUM)
Kostelni 42, Prague 7 Tues-Sun 09-17 Admission: 30Kc
Metro: Hradcanska Tram: Letenske Namesti (#1, 8, 25, 26)
With an enormous amount
of exhibitable works, this museum's only problem is choosing which ones
to put on display. Here you'll find all the evidence of how this part
of the world was once at the forefront of European industry and technology.
Machines, engines, communication developments and designs are all well
displayed.
A major disappointment,
this museum sits at the top of Wenceslas square but although it's a
stunning building - inside is an array of stuffed animals and fossels
which are, in all honesty, not worth the visit.
UMELECKOPRUMYSLOVE
MUZEUM
(MUSEUM OF DECORATIVE ARTS)
Ulice 17 Listopadu 2 Prague 1 Tues.-Sun., 10.00-18.00

An interesting collection
of glass, crystal, costumes and porcelain covering the Czechs impressive
influence in this area of art.

15 Kc
Metro: Namesti Republiky Tram: Revolucni (# 5, 14, 26)
Philately in Europe
and Czechoslovakia is, unsurprisingly, the theme of this comprehensive
collection in a building which was once a mill. The history of stamps
and stamp making and interesting designs and photographic displays make
this a dream for all collectors but interesting for non-collectors too.
MUCHA MUSEUM
Panska 7, Prague 1 Daily: 10-18
Metro: Mustek
Alfons Mucha is one
of this countries most famous sons and he has, quite rightly, now got
his own space in the centre of Prague displaying the history of his
life and work. Everyone knows some of Muchas work and they have something
for everyone here including his work for biscuit companies and for the
actress Sarah Bernhardt in Paris at the turn of the century.
MUZEUM HLAVNIHO
MESTA PRAHY
(THE MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF PRAGUE)
Na Porici 52, Prague 2 Tues-Sun: 09-18 Metro: Florenc
Admission: 30 Kc
A good, comprehensive
and yet concise history of Prague including some fascinating exhibits.
Everything from medieval weponry to documents concerning the Nazi occupation,
this museum is also home to an amazing scale model of Prague from 1826.
ZIDOVSKE MUZEUM
PRAHA
(JEWISH MUSEUM OF PRAGUE)
Jachymova 3, Prague 1 Nov-March: Mon-Sat: 09.00-16.30:
May-Oct: 09-18 Metro: Staromestska
It was Hitler who
decided that most of the relics and exhibits in this collection should
be preserved - as a museum to an extinct race. It's made up of a number
of venues including the Old New Synagogue, one of the oldest in Europe
and a cemetary holding over 12,000 graves. There is also a very moving
collection of childrens art from Terezin - a camp in occupied Czechoslovakia
which served as a transit camp for Jews being moved to concentration
camps.
VOJENSKE HISTORICKE
MUZEUM
(THE MILITARY HISTORY MUSEUM)
Scwarzenbersky Palace Hradcanske namesti 2, Prague 1 May-Oct:
09.30-18
Metro: Malostranska Tram: Pohrelec (# 22)
In a beautiful renaissance
building close to the castle, you can see what has been described as
one of the better collections of its kind in the world. Weapons and
tactics from throughout the ages.
WAX MUSEUM PRAGUE
Palace Rapid Ulice 28 Rijna 13, Prague 1 Daily 10-20 Admission:
120 Kc
Metro: Mustek
Famous Czechs from
history, famous artists and inventors from all over the world and figures
from the Communist era - the Prague wax museum is at the bottom of Wenceslas
Square and it's adding more figures all the time.
Prague Art
Galeries
NATIONAL GALLERY
FOR MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART
Veletrzni palac, Dukelskych hrdinu 47, Prague 7 Tues-Sun
10-18 (Thurs 10-21) Admission 80kc
Metro: Vltavska Tram: Veletrzni (# 5, 12, 17)
The first floor of
this 7 storey gallery is devoted to travelling shows and exhibitions
and the rest is dedicated to all types of Czech and international modern
art. There really is something for everybody here and some fascinating
displays. Only re-opened as a gallery in 1995 after the original conference
space was damaged by fire this is a wonderful addition to Czech's National
Galleries.
GALERIE RUDOLFINUM
Alsovo Nabrezi 12, Prague 1 Tues-Sun 10-18 Admission 50Kc
Metro: Staromestska Tram: Namesti Jana Palacha (# 17,
18)
This gallery is situated
in the magnificent Rudolfinum building and it plays host to some very
interesting travelling exhibitions.
MANES GALLERY
Masarykovo Nabrezi 250, Prague 1 Tues-Sun 10-18 Admission
25Kc
Metro: Karlovo Namesti ('Palackeho Namesti' exit) Tram:
Manes (# 17, 18)
Manes is a combination
of rooms and exhibition space and even has a nice outdoor terrace for
a summer drink overlooking the river. Along the Quays of the river Vltava
this gallery usually shows some intriguing stuff and is close to that
other intriguing piece of art - the so-called "Dancing Building".
GALERIE VLTAVIN
Masarykovo nabrezi 36, Prague 1 Daily 10-12, 13-18
Metro: Narodni Trida Tram: Narodni Divadlo (# 6, 9, 17,
18, 22)
Another gallery along
the quays, this one is close to the National Theatre (Narodni Divadlo)
and celebrates the more eccentric side of art - both Czech and international.
There are 3 upstairs rooms and a basement displaying the likes of Salvador
Dali and Max Ernst with local artists.
OBECNI DUM
(MUNICIPAL HOUSE)
Namesti Republiky 5, Prague 1 Daily 10-18 Admission 60Kc
Metro and Tram: Namesti Republiky (# 5, 14, 24)
Once again, the location
of a gallery in Prague competes with the art to be seen inside. Obecni
Dum is the huge Art Nuveau building at Namesti Republiky. This recently
refurbished and re-opened building hosts a cafe, a traditional Czech
pub, exhibition space, concert halls and ball rooms. This whole building
is a must-see and the exhibitions will not disappoint either with the
likes of the recent Czech Art Deco retrospective.
GALERIE U SV. MARTINA
(GALLERY OF ST. MARTINA)
Uhelny trh 11, Prague 1 Tu-Fr 12-13:30, Sa 10-14
All types of artwork
are on display and for sale in this gallery - jewellery, marionettes,
sculptures, ceramics and contemporary Czech paintings. A good idea for
gifts.
