Karlstejn
Castle
Visit the
14th century Karlstejn Castle, in which were stored the crown jewels and
personal relics of Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor. The Imperial Palace
features an exhibit of Charles' life and dynasty. The Luxemburg Hall holds
a tapestry version of the Luxemburg family tree. Charles frequented the
Church of Our Lady and the Chapel of St. Catherine, which is decorated
with rich stained glass windows and its walls with semiprecious stones.
Karlovy
Vary
These most
famous of Czech spas were founded in 1358 by the Bohemian King Charles
IV. Twelve mineral springs with temperatures ranging from 42ΊC to 72ΊC
(133ΊF to 187ΊF) flow here. The local thermal waters are used for oral
treatments, bathing and rinsing. The guests from more than 80 countries
of the world taking the waters at Karlovy Vary, are also able to enrich
their cure with golf, tennis and other sports. Karlovy Vary is a city
of festivals, concerts and the most various of cultural activities as
well. The city is known throughout the world for its traditional products:
Glass, Porcelain, Becher liqueur and waffle wafers.
Kutna
Hora
The picturesque
medieval town of Kutna Hora, a member of the UNESCO Sites, lies approximately
60 km east of Prague. The source of the beauties and riches of Kutna Hora
lay in the silver mines that were exploited most intensively in the 14th
and 15th centuries. At that time the town rivaled Prague itself in importance.
The dominant monument is the unique Gothic Cathedral of St. Barbara, the
patron saint of miners. The centre of the town is made up of an irregular
tangle of medieval streets in which many old burghers` houses can be found.
Other architectural jewels include the superb Stone House, the Gothic
fountain, and the Archdiocesan Church of St. James.
Cesky
Krumlov
The picturesque
town of Cesky Krumlov, a member of the UNESCO Sites, is situated in the
deep, meandering valley along the upper Vltava River in Southern Bohemia,
not far from Ceskι Budejovice. As many as three hundred historic buildings,
foremost its huge castle and the Church of St. Vitus, bear witness to
its rich past. The greatest flowering of the town was linked to the period
of the rule of the Lords of Rosenberg (1302-1602), who made it the seat
of their large estates. The town experienced another wave of cultural
revival towards the end of the 17th century under the rule of the Eggenbergs,
when among other improvements, a boroque theatre was built and a castle
garden created.
Terezin
Terezin was
founded at the end of 18th century as an ingenious system of the military
fortresses for the protection of the Kingdom. During the World War II
completely changed and converted into the Jewish ghetto and the concentration
camp by Nazis, a place of suffering for over 90.000 prisoners. The town
is situated about 60 km north of Prague.
